There's a USA Bandit 112 with Sheffield for around $100 locally. I'm considering picking it up to be my second amp for playing with PSG stereo effects. Unfortunately the Reverb control pot shaft appears to be sheared right off but seller says the reverb still works.

Anyone know what pot I'd have to purchase and how difficult it would be to repair this myself?

Two other things.

-Any thoughts on useability of Bandit 112 for Steel?

-Any comments on the Sheffield 1230 speaker?

It's a "snap-in" pot more than likely, Teal Stripe, and Silver Stripe Bandits work great for guitar, never plugged a steel into one!

Seller just accepted my offer of $100 and I'll pick it up tomorrow morning. I figure as long as it works, even if I end up hating it I can still get my money back. This is the amp. Looks pretty clean.






Can't quite make out the serial number, any ideas on year for this one?

I have one and it works fine for steel. If additional EQ is needed I use a Boss pedal. The Sheffield is a decent speaker and more of a full range PA type. I actually bought this for Telecaster but I had to try it with steel guitar. Plenty loud and the Reverb is ok.

I inherited one of those from my nephew, it was dead, it jumped out of his pickup when he took a "shortcut" down the mountain! I decided to put it in a head cab, and the Sheffield had a rub, so I installed a Weber.
Great sounding amp!

Thanks for the input folks.
Just picked it up. Sounded good with sellers guitar. It's a bigger ammp than I expected.

Haven't tried it with steel.

Any advice regarding settings for steel?

Settings? Karl, try dialing down the mids. This is where the 112 has an advantage: you can select the frequency to lower.

I'd also boost the bass a bit and be careful of shrieking highs.

Thanks Chris I'll give that a try.

My brother was over this weekend and he put it through it's paces with an LP clone (I don't really play 6 string) and it sounded great for the sort of southern rock/country licks he was playing. Whether or not it ends up being a keeper for me, he showed that it's definitely worth repairing the Reverb pot. Even if I don't use it for steel, it may be worth keeping around just for jamming with guitar players.

On the original topic, does anyone have any insight into why Peavey went to pots with such skinny shafts? I always thought USA Peavey was all about durability and gigging and I think all the earlier Peavey's I've played have had more robust pots. I now understand why so many folks purchased the chrome control protector rails.
