This is my first attempt at recording a complete song on my Excel S-13 D13 copedant steel. I missed a few pedals and the Steel King amp was starting to distort a bit but the guitar came through fine. I kept the amp's reverb (Mod reverb tank) in the recording instead of opting for the more lush and spacious Reaper stereo reverb plug-in so you can hear what it sounds like mic'ed with a Shure SM57.

Nice job Greg. Interesting sound, very unique. The closest I can describe it is it sounds a bit more trebely than a wood guitar. Would you say that is characteristic of the Excel?

Bill, that's pretty close to what I hear right now. With the King's tone controls it's easy to change the sound to be anywhere from harsh to mellow but the guitar's overtones and sustain stay the same. For the best sound I like to add stereo reverb, touch up the midrange and a bit of echo to get a fat panned recorded sound. It would then sound pretty glorious but isn't what I was shooting for here.
The Mod reverb tank makes the Steel King's reverb more like a deep hall reverb and very close to a good stomp box reverb when cranked up. |
