I acquired a Peavey Artist tube amp from the 70s today and think it sounds pretty good with my steel. Anyone else ever tried this amp for steel? |

Hey Alan. I'm sure a few players have had these. I bought 2 of these back in the early 90s. 4 6L6 tubes. 120W. Mine had the 1501-4 flat magnet Black Widow speakers.
Maybe just me, but I could never get them dialed in for steel, especially for C6. Possibly because I preferred a bassier tone. I sold one to a forum member and can't remember who got the other one.
The first edition Artist 240 with the chrome knobs were the best ones v. the VT series. They also put out a version with a 12 speaker.
Your tone requirements are probably different from mine and you can most likely dial in a tone that pleases you.

Thanks, Jerry! Yes, I was wondering how much difference the 1504 would make. Very crisp tone, but lacks bottom end, though. |

Mike Brown revealed here on the forum that Peavey limited the bass response of their higher-powered amps to reduce speaker failures, which was their biggest warranty repair problem.
(This was the reason that John LeMay came up with his famous "mod kits" for certain Peavey amps.) |
