Very classy panda! As for #12 being the last--I've been retired for almost 5 years now, and I've actually gotten more instruments built in those 5 years than I had in ages. Mostly thanks to COVID lockdown, but even fitting instrument making in between downsizing/moving out of state and doing a lot of home repair/construction kind of things it's been great to feel somewhat productive again. I hope your retirement goes as well as mine has so far, and hope that lucky #13 is soon to follow.

Thanks Dave. I've been spoiled with being able to use good equipment at work. At this age, limited useable space at home, and some more urgent projects that need to be done, I won't be building anymore lapsteels. Now it's time to use what I have and practice, practice, practice. I hope I enjoy my retirement as much as you are yours. NC high country? Do you live in the Appalachian Mountain area? Pretty country. You don't have a still cookin do you for extra retirement income? _________________ Currently own, 6 Groner-tone lap steels, one 1953 Alamo Lap steel, Roland Cube, Fender Champion 40 |

Hey Pete, thanks! It was kind of funny, I was hard at work on this one, and then Larkin Poe's new lapsteel was posted. That is a sweet one for sure and probably half the weight of mine. At my age I'm not jumping around on any stage, for anybody! So as long as it doesn't cut the circulation in my legs while on my lap, I'm good! These two are my favorite ones. The odd shape on the bottom of the one didn't fit my stands very well. I had some leftover pieces of wood so that fit the bill quite well.

Bill, You are certainly finishing with a flourish! Those favorites of yours are truly works of art and craft. Bravo! And soon you'll have more time to spend on the string side of them! |

Bill my absolute favourite guitar is the one you describe with an odd shaped bottom.......That is the coolest looking guitar I have ever seen! |

Tony, David, Mike, thank you. Mike, I cannot take credit for the body design. It was a design from the 30's, I forget the man's name who manufactured them, but it caught my eye.
I found the link.

The guy was Paul Tutmarc of Seattle WA. AudioVox was his brand. See:

Love the new one and I also would like to hear it. Used to be in the same boat but retired machinist for 15 years now and don't miss it at all. John |

Just beautiful, outstanding work Bill. Kudos! I like how you kept the aesthetics of the Panda and Audiovox in your builds but then added your own customizations. Very much how Tom Pettingill was with wood lap steels.
Gotta love that Lollar String-thru pup, really growls if you dig in. _________________ Four Pettingills and a Clinesmith Aluminum. Fender Blues Junior. Quilter Mini-101. |

Thank you John, Mike, and Steve. I joined the forum in 2016. Sadly 2 months after I joined Tom passed away. He was a very talented builder. I was in awe of his builds. I miss seeing the lapssteels he would come up with. I think in January it will be 7 years since he passed? Steve you are lucky,to have the Pets you have. His craftsmanship was 2nd to none!

Mr. Tutmarc also built and marketed the Audiovox 736 solidbody electric bass at least a decade before the Precision was even a gleam in Leo's eye.
