I just purchased a John Allison S-8 console steel locally here in New Zealand. They are made in Austin, Texas. Beautiful ash body and hot Rio Grande pickups, in a design style somewhere between the Fender Stringmaster and the National New Yorker, on three legs.
I'm in love with the tasteful design and the implementation of the Stringmaster-style blend control. I used the blend fully open when I had a Stringmaster, but overall I prefer the configuration on this guitar - more diverse, usable tones.
On the other hand, I've spent so much time playing my JB frypan through a little Roland Cube that I have to go back to the drawing board because this new guitar is just not interacting with it in the same way.
Does anybody else have an Allison non-pedal steel? What sort of gear are you running it through?
I'll upload a little demo over the weekend! _________________ Commodore S-8
