Boz Scaggs Loan Me a Dime

I must have been asleep back in the day this came out. I'm familiar with a lot of his stuff and I like all that I have heard. It's just the standard radio cuts like Lido, Dirty Low Down etc., but man, this thing is bada$$.

I found a list of the musicians on the album online, but I'd be really interested to know who's playing the lead guitar. He is listed on guitar, but I'm not all that familiar with how much guitar he plays.

The great Duane Allman (From the Allman Brothers Band) played on that track. Back in the day, we played that track all the time.

Yeah, I read that Duane played, but I thought that was all slide guitar on his part.

They list Jimmy Johnson and Eddie Hinton on guitar too but I don't know if it's the listing for the LP or this cut.

Since Boz's version of Loan Me A Dime is a featured track on the posthumously released Duane Allman anthology double-album, it would seem doubtful that the stellar guitar work would be Johnson, Hinton, (or Scaggs).

OK, well I found some info online at the Last FM and otherwise that states that it is Duane coming in on the guitar at about one minute in and a solo at around 4 mins. Also some input from YouTube. Here's the link if anybody's interested. https://youtu.be/vXLJTOIPGew

The other musicians I mentioned were the Muscle Shoals Swampers where this version was cut and included on Scaggs' second self titled album.
Among them, Barry Beckett on keys to which Pete Finney alluded earlier.

I first heard it on Jango, which is a 16 min long live version, which may be the version others here have mentioned, but I couldn't find any links to that cut.

I guess this is common knowledge among devotees of either Boz or Duane, but it was new to me and inquiring minds and all that....you know.

So that's a wrap unless someone else wants to extend the topic.

Jerry, the Duane Allman anthology album came out in the early 70's, and is an excellent album. I've owned several of the vinyls over the last almost 50 years, wearing them out (before they disappeared with ex-wives). Great stuff. Another famous cut on that collection is the Beatle's "Hey Jude", with Wilson Pickett, Duane on guitar (and the swampers). Just killer.

Jerry, the "Boz Scaggs" album with "Loan Me A Dime" was released long before Boz Scaggs was very well known. As Wikipedia says, "[The album] Boz Scaggs was mostly ignored by listeners and critics upon release, and only sold around 20,000 copies within its first few years." So it is not surprising it slipped under your radar at the time. I remember hearing that track in my youth, but it was probably from the Duane Allman Anthology album, released in '72 as I was a big Allman Bros. fan back then. I recently rediscovered it!

The info I found states Boz's second LP with this tune on it from the Muscle Shoals studio that I linked to above, was released in 1967...others say '69.

The version I found that started my search was on Jango radio. It is a live cut with audience responses. It may be the from the Anthology work referred to above by a few members. If that's the case, perhaps those are different musicians with maybe Gregg? on the Hammond.

I can't find any links to that particular audio. It's like 16 mins. long.

Anyone interested in hearing that one can get it through chordie.com by entering the search as Boz Scaggs Loan Me a Dime there and see the button to hear the song on Jango.

It's no big deal. I had just found it and curious about the players. It was the B3 intro that got me and throughout the song. Big Hammond fan. Since there was such an audience response to the guitar in the live version, I was curious to know who that might be.

The version on the Duane Anthology is not live, and I think it’s only about 12 minutes. Also, there is a full horn section on it that comes in during the uptempo part.

The Jango Radio version you heard could be one of many live recordings of the tune. Some can be found on youtube. Maybe it was this one with Drew Zingg on guitar -
