Can anybody tell me how well regarded these resos are in terms of quality? There is one for sale I saw that I'm guessing was built in the 1990's and was supposedly owned by Junior Barber. It has a well loved finish but looks solid. The headstock says it was made in NY

Deneve has a good reputation, but like anything, each instrument is different. I had an 8 string Deveve that I wasn't too happy with and sold soon after I got it, but the 6 strings are very well regarded.

Dick Deneve was a reputable builder.

In my hands, depending on the tonewood involved, his guitars leaned more "classic" than "contemporary".

Good fit & finish. Solid construction.

A friend of mine had one and I found it to be incredibly loud. Solidly built. I believe he got it through Junior Barbour.

There's a good amount of info on Deneve resos on the Reso Hangout forum. They seem to be regarded as solid handmade guitars in a similar price & quality range as the Wechter Scheerhorn or upper end GoldTone Beard dobros. I bought mine used about 10 years ago on a recommendation from a more experienced dobro player and have been very happy with the guitar, no complaints. I primarily play pedal steel and wanted a dobro to use occasionally on sessions or acoustic gigs and jams, this does the job very well. They have a reputation for being very loud guitars. If I were really going hard at the bluegrass dobro stuff I'd probably start eyeing the Scheerhorns, Beards, Fishooks etc, but that's a whole other level. And like any other reso, making sure the guitar has a quality cone and is set up correctly is very important.

I spent quite a lot of time playing a used one that was in town a few years ago and I loved it. These guitars have a good reputation. I did talk to Junior about his Deneve guitars (I gathered that he had more than one) and he was very happy with them. Junior Barber was an amazing and inspiring player.
