Topic: Baffled, need help with tuning 4th string (E) |

I'm sure this has been discussed but on my Mullen G2 (standard E9th setup) Everything was fine and in tune til yesterday. My 4th string E to F raise did not sound right.
So I started with and tuned the 4th string (E) open to be correct in tune (@440).
Then when I tune the 'F' lever to raise the same string to be in tune (@440) the open E (4th string) that I started with now comes back sharp. If I back off the hex tuning at the changer the open E, now comes back flat.
I'm baffled & can't figure it out.
I don't temper tune, I tune always tune everything to 440 & an happy with it.
Just not sure what to do?? |

Did you change strings? If you changed strings and installed a string by a different maker or the string is 1 or 2 thousands smaller it could take more movement.
Did you order the guitar new and it was set up for 440 tuning. If the guitar was set up for like Newman's tuning where the tuning is 440 Minus 18 Cents would not allow proper tuning.
You may have to go under the guitar and move the pull rod connector 1 hole farther from the cross shaft in the bell crank to give the string enough travel to tune.
Another solution may be, Adjusting the stop on the knee lever, To allow more pull rod travel for the raise.

Thanks again Bobby & Richard,
What did solve the issue was adjusting the (F) knee lever stop adjustment screw to allow for more pull / travel.
(Just as you mentioned Bobby) I then was able to back off the nylon tuning nut at the changer. I assume this was now letting the changer finger rest against the stop.
But now work's like a charm (and all at 440) and was a bit frustrating til your help.  |
