QUIZ FIRST: How much does a guitar string stretch when bent a full step? Say, when you bend the second string from A to B (open D tuning)? ("Stretch" = dL = change in string length from anchor point to anchor point). Answer later.

I re-rigged my test guitar to find out. Pics show general layout of my test rig, close up of the tuning mechanism/bridge/scale, and section view of bridge and tuner.
.

DETAILS:
- 25 inch scale length
- 0.018" D'Adarrio XL string, new but I grabbed and pulled it pretty hard, seems stable.
- Riot Tuner: gearless, 40:1 ratio (very cool). These tuners work by pulling the string through the central axis by turning a screw with fine threads. The string is anchored into the brass tip at far right.
- Korg tuning meter.

I tuned the single string to A and noted the position of the tuning nut on the scale. Then tuned the string to B and measured. And repeated. Measurements are very repeatable.

Any guesses? I'll post the measurements in comments soon, after a few answers.

Also, it turns out I actually built a HUGE test guitar. The whole bench vibrates and the Korg meter works just as well on the far vise.

Thanks a heap,
-jbb

The answer:

Less than 1 mm: ~0.95 +/- 0.05 mm.
