Hey there. I want to put some heavier strings on my ‘29 Tricone (also flatwounds, as I like the sound better). I’ll need to put together a custom set of singles. Just wanted to double-check an old forum thread, C#m7 tuning string gauges would be: 016 .018 .026 .034 .044 .056. Too heavy for a Nat’l Tricone square neck? Thanks! Pete

I always used a gauge very close to that for several years. I may have used a .015 on top.

Thanks, Mike! Curious… Do you prefer flatwounds?

No, I always used phosphor bronze roundwound. I wore them out fast. Had to change 3rd string every gig, and the first two strings every other because of dents.

Mike - Have you tried flatwounds? Looking for a heavier set for my Tricone and would love to get away from the ‘scritch’ of round wound strings.

I never tried acoustic flat top/half wound, if that’s what you mean. I did try some old sets of Black Diamonds and Gibson Mona strings; no dice on those. I wouldn’t recommend flatwound electric strings, if that’s what you are referring to.

Hi Peter,

your string gauges sound about right, 026 for the G# is a bit on the heavy side, though.
I really like Daddario Flattop strings, used them for years on my Tricone.
More info about this you can find on my website:

What is the scale length of the Tricone?
