3M double Stick Tape seems to be very good.
A good contact cement would work well, but its messy to use.
Some companies use small screws or nails.

The same way you apply golf grips.
Double sided tape on the fretboard. Make it slick with naphtha (Ronsonol lighter fluid) and place where you wish. Press or use a roller to make tidy and tight.
The fluid will give you a little time to position the fretboard on your guitar just as it gives a little time to line up your golf grip to the head of the club.

There is a "removable" spray adhesive which allows for repositioning.
I don't know if that's really desirable.

Thin non-foam double sided tape seems ideal, but it is unforgiving.

Thin double sided tape is forgiving if you follow my instructions. How do you think golf grips are aligned perfectly?
