Excellent Doug. For a while when I started to play lap steel guitar I played in normal guitar tuning. I was way more comfortable playing single note runs and improvising. The problem came with chordal and harmony playing. I then thought if I am going to try and play steel guitar seriously it was going to be in a standard steel guitar tuning and finger picks.
After all this time and watching your video I am not sure I would have been better staying with conventional guitar tuning ! Just kidding. Love what you do Doug! |

Thank you for the kind comments. The decision to go with a standard guitar tuning made perfect sense to me because I've been playing the song on guitar for 50+ years. Back in the 60s every youngster who was learning to play guitar Had to learn "Walk Don't Run". It was a rite of passage! In recent years I tried playing the song on pedal steel E9 and on every non-pedal tuning I know, all to no avail. Just couldn't get the sound, the feel and the energy of the original on any other tuning.

So what did you do with the 2 extra strings, tuning-wise? I think I’m hearing a lower octave E, maybe? Anything else doubled or extending the guitar range?

I removed them. Didn't need them for this song and they just got in the way. In fact, I took All of the strings off the guitar and restrung it for 6-string "guitar tuning". But I didn't use a regular set of guitar strings (too thin). I consulted John Ely's excellent string gauge chart for the proper gauges for lap steel. So the strings are thicker than normal guitar strings.

No, except I did add a few harmony notes on regular guitar, very few, in part of the melody, as was played on the original recording. It's easy to play those harmonies on regular guitar, but not with a bar on a lap steel. Those harmony notes are mixed low so they can barely be heard.
FYI: I'm playing through a Black Box (tube filter) and a Keeley 4-knob compressor (low level setting) and using an OCD overdrive on that short breakdown section in the middle. Quilter Tone Block 202 head w/reverb, recorded direct.
