Curly was such a huge pedal steel talent that I can't seem to find any discussion on his lapsteel days. Here he is with Lefty Frizell, any idea what his tuning is?

Me too Jean. The opening strum works on strings 2, 3, 4 and 5 of standard C6 (E on top) starting on the 3rd fret.

I was thinking the same, however it could also be Don Helms E6? Same tuning as C6 but based in E.

After listening again, this particular phrase starts on a D chord and glisses up, ending on an A. With C6 that goes from the 2nd fret to the 10th fret and back down to the 9th fret. With E6, the starting D will be off the fretboard so I don't think Curly could have been using E6.

That's a good point Tim. I think I need to put some time in decoding these!
