Can anyone on the site let me know what too watch for when buying older model Fender double neck lap steels when it comes to pickup design, possible problems to watch for ,as weak magnets etc.

The "boxcar" pickup bobbins tend to shrink and warp, which can lead to buzzing against the strings and even broken coils. Tom Brantley rebuilds them brilliantly.

As far as I know, the trapezoid pickups don't have that issue.

The trap pickups may have similar issues. I've had several rebuilt over the years.

Yep, the trap pickup can do it too, i got lucky with mine though, not so lucky with the boxcar. Here's my '46 after Tom Brantley worked his magic.

Shrunken "boxcar"

"trap" pickup with center support piece inside bobbin.
