I came into a stripped Gibson BR-3 that I converted to 7 string:

Some real beauties there Noah. Those old Audiovox lap steels are really cool. How do they sound?

Both of mine are (were?) Ultratones that I rescued from basketcases.

I purchased this v1 that had been crudely converted from a 7-string to a 6-string, and featured a pickup and a butchered mounting plate from a Skylark (?!?). I cut back the fretboard (its pointed tips were broken off anyhow), enlarged the pickup cavity, installed two custom Sentell 7-string Stringmaster-style pickups, wired 'em out of phase with volume, tone, and blend pots, and fabricated a pickup mounting plate. Custom 7-string bridge by Dave Peterson. I fabricated the 7-string nut from aluminum bar stock. I call it the "Ultramaster:"

Doesn't look like much, but it plays like a dream and sounds fantastic.

The v2 was a beater that was stripped of all but the fretboard. I converted it from a 6-string to a 7-string:

Once again, the pickup is from Jerry Sentell, and the bridge is from Dave Peterson. Plays and sounds great.

Looks freaking awesome to me! Nicely done.

Since I never had the chance to play a 7-stringer: In comparison to a six string guitar: Do you add a low or a high string?

Moderate output, with a fairly warm and full-bodied tone. Not unlike early National-Dobro electrics - which isn't really a surprise, since Dobro bought Audiovox's pickup design.

Yes. Or add one in the middle!

I use the same A6 tuning on my 7-strings as my 6-strings, but with a low A added.

I tune most of my 6-strings to standard C6 (E-C-A-G-E-C, high-to-low). But the two 7-strings pictured above I tune A6 (E-C#-A-F#-E-C#-A). I find a pitch higher than E on the first string weak and whiny.

Thank you, Allan. I had considered refinishing the body, but since it plays well and sounds great, that's good enough for me. After all, it's the sound that counts. It's definitely a player, not a wall hanger.

Both have almost exactly the same scale and string spacing and both are tuned to C13 so no adjustment when I switch guitar.

Nice assortment guys! I picked up a '41 Gibson EH-150 on ebay a year or so back. It has the interim diagonal tortoise shell pickup that they probably didn't make many seven strings of, although I see that Noah's EH-185 has one. I replace the corroded fretboard with a reproduction that I got from Andy DePaule and replaced the tuners with 18:1 open backed Grovers that at least have a period look. I realize that probably devalued the guitar somewhat but it made it more functional and looks pretty good (I think). Mickey seems to like it anyway.

My Melobar SXL with Dobro simulation circuit and coil tap. Probably not many of these out there. 24.5 inch scale. Powerful and clear.
