Mickey died Sept 29, 2002. He was one of my favorite song writers and singers. I have many of his albums and loved to hear him sing. Hard to believe he has been gone this long.

One of the first songs I ever remember playing in my first club band was Why You Been Gone So Long. “Wolf is scratchin at my door, can’t you hear that lonesome wind moan” - one of the greatest lines ever!

His voice had that something-between-scream-and-whisper/fine-grit sandpaper quality, like Don Henley.

Edited to fix the funky text leftover from the website breakdown.

Steel players certainly glommed onto Sweet Memories. Part of our beautiful, morose, funereal repertoire, one reckons.

The first time I heard him sing was in 1973. The song was Sunshine. After I heard it I went to the record store and bought it. It was a 45. After that I bought every album I could find over the years and still have them. Sunshine has got to be one of his pain songs and is on youtube.

My mom loves him too. She dated a couple of songwriters back in the day around LA. I've always suspected Mickey Newbury but she won't admit it. She ended up marrying my dad...a steel player.
