Since it's early Autumn, here's my arrangment of the gorgeous standard "Early Autumn". This tune by big band arranging genius Ralph Burns (with lyrics by Johnny Mercer) was the song that first brought Stan Getz's beautiful sound to the world's attention.

I took a long run at this tune about six years ago on Weissenborn and, despite my valiant efforts, the bridge completely defeated me. This week I took another shot at it in Fmaj7 tuning which is identical to C6th except string #4 is lowered from G to F.

The original is in the key of Bb. I moved it up to C. Let me know what you think.

Here are two favorite performances of this cinematic gem:
Jo Stafford: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMzRr9faOR0
Stan Getz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofIdAHqNP7o

When I saw chord changes like these in bars 24 & 25 - and every arrangement of this tune I can find seems to differ - I went with my ear.

I took another pass but came up empty for these two bars in this tuning. With a double-8 one could jump necks. How would you deal with this progression?

Hi Andy,

Nice work on this tune!

Here's a way to handle those changes in the Leavitt tuning, if you don't mind repeating the melody note for each quarter note.

I imagine it would be difficult to achieve the downward chromatic nature of the line holding the stable lead notes each over two chords without using pedals or at least some string pulls.
It would be workable in other tunings just playing the lead note and one note beneath by using slants, but might not be so convincing.
I'm going to see what I can come up with in C6th

Nice job, Rob! I figured Leavitt or B11th might get closer for that turnaround but I was trying to see if I could stick to Fmaj7. what you came up with sounds good! As you say, hard to get that chromatic movement plus the proper melody notes in a 6-string fixed tuning.
