I have read lots of posts about the competing merits of different makes of guitar cable: George L, Belden, etc. On Saturday night on my way home from a gig, I discovered how much quality cable really matters. After hitting a raccoon at 65 miles an hour on the highway, my bumper was left severely compromised. I grabbed the only suitable material I had in the almost new car: a guitar cable from my pack a seat. Not only did this thing hold the bumper together long enough to get me home the last 60 miles, tied and retied several time in double knots, but it still functions perfectly. Let’s hear it for Belden cable, and Smash music of Derry New Hampshire (previously Daren’s Music) who assembled this cable who-knows how many years ago. Cable you can count on, in more ways than you might have imagined!

"Lesson learned - always carry duct tape."

And also don't forget the old wire coat hanger.

What I really need is a critter catcher on the front of my car. Even interstates seems to be playgrounds for these varmints at 1am.

I'm glad that you are OK Dan.

Do you feel like you could hear more highs from your bumper using the high quality cable??

Hard to say Doug. By the time I gave up on AAA, tied up the bumper, and started for home it was 2:30am, so I was pretty much only hearing lows at that point.

Great story!

Nothing to do with cables, but with make-do car repairs...Back in the early 80's, my wife woke me up to tell me she was in labor and was ready to go, and I went outside in a big snowstorm to start the car. Nothing...

Got under the hood and found a busted battery cable. I stripped the wire back and took a small pair of vise grips and temporarily mended the cable holding it together with these. Wrapped it up good in electrical tape, and it was off to the hospital.

A couple of weeks later, I was looking for my vise grips. They were still holding the cable together. Forgot all about it in all the excitement. I still have those vise grips and still use them. But they have no sonic impact one way or the other.

But my son who was born that night (next day actually) is a far better musician than I am today.

I keep a roll of cloth gaff tape handy in my gear bag. That stuff is AMAZING, started using it around the house for various things. Then the wife discovered how amazing it is so she ordered her own roll on Amazon. I am not allowed to touch it, go figure. 😊
