Thanks for the link Johan. That's pretty nice music there. I just love that early no pedal fixed tuned steel guitar played by such masterful musicians.

Although the credits I find at www.discogs.com state pedal steel, I'm dubious. If so, it's a terrific throw back.

I know nothing of this save what I read there.
This is what I found at the site. States Norway as country:

Accordion, Banjo, Pedal Steel Guitar, Acoustic Guitar – Stian Carstensen
Double Bass, Percussion, Celtic Harp, Glockenspiel – Ole Morten Vågan
Engineer – Dag Yri, Eyvinn Magnus Solberg, Henning Svoren, Håvard Christensen
Mastered By – Morgan Nicolaysen
Mixed By – Hasse Rosbach
Violin, Viola, Bass Violin, Hammond B3 – Ola Kvernberg

I see the album is available at apple music and spotify etc. Some of the other cuts are very nice too. I didn't preview all of them so I don't know if there is more steel guitar on it.

That was beyond great playing, and maybe a pedal or two used.

Sure sounds like the style Jeff Newman played.

Not non-pedal, and certainly not old. Unique style though!

I don't know how this steel player (Stian Carstensen) has almost completely escaped notice on this forum. Here's the only thread I can find referencing anything about him - https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=180082&start=125

He is an amazing multi-instrumentalist whose 'main' instrument seems to be accordion, but seems to excel at almost anything he touches. Some examples:

With Farmer's Market and Michael Brecker! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uJbzh7QS8g

With Farmer's Market and KORK - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMD7JB883Xw

Wielding an Ibanez JEM guitar - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlha7FisODQ

A couple of solo things with a Zumsteel D10:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgP9nonXzio

A wicked western swing instrumental - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1eNJH891fM

A recent example showing him playing an old Gibson C530 Console Steel on a film collaboration with Dave McKean - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgXi6WNC920 - although the credits say pedal steel

And tons more if you look. Geez, his wikipedia entry doesn't even indicate steel guitar at all - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stian_Carstensen

I listened to the entire "Gammalgrass" album last night and it's wonderful, very eclectic and amazing playing all around.

Thanks for posting this Johan.

As Jerry mentioned it's on all the streaming services. Here's the YouTube playlist:

Dave Mudgett - you went down the same rabbit hole I did in searching out Stian Carstensen's music. There's some great playing there. Follow some of the links that Dave posted.

Hi guys, thanks for the nice words. I didn't have the self confidence to say I'm a steel player, I have so much respect for that beast. However it'd be nice to hook up with people playing steel, I have so many questions;)

Stian - we all have questions. My main question is how does someone have time to become proficient on both the accordian and pedal steel? Great playing. The Hippocampus Serenade video is burrowing deeper into my brain every day.
