Looks like tuners for strings 1 & 8 were added by a previous owner. The work doesn't look original (or clean) to me.

I feel like I've seen 7 & 10 string Gibsons like that, but not an 8 string.

Definitely modded from an early two-knob Century-6. There are factory Century-10s, but not 8-strings. The only postwar Gibson 8-string lap steel to emerge from the Kalamazoo factory that I'm aware of is the Skylark-8 from the late 50s, which is fairly uncommon.

It would be interesting to look under the cover and inspect the pickup. The cover appears to have been modified to accept an 8-string bridge. Worth checking out as a player, but of questionable worth to a collector due to the mods.
