The Big Hurt. I've liked this tune since hearing Wes' version at about age 20. The original vocal version is pretty forgettable but what Wes on guitar, and Gary on lap steel, were able to craft from such humble materials is magical.

I love the whole Wes Montgomery Tequila album. It is one of the first jazz records I bought, at the tender age of 13 or 14, and it holds up to this day. I know people who feel the strings detract, but it works for me. Of course, the Vanduras version is great.

Personally, I think it's a real good song from a good writer, not exactly 'humble'. I do think the flanging on Toni's voice really detracts. I think it exaggerated her already slightly shrill vibrato which can be clearly heard here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzzlo2mU7gE. I suppose that may have been the gimmick that sold it to the masses.

Tequila and California Dreaming' are maligned by jazz purists but I find them brilliant. On the liner notes for the CD reissue of Tequila, Pat Metheny said something like ... It's one thing to play multiple choruses on a jazz tune and quite another to be able to make a perfect gem of a statement on 16 bars of a pop tune. Wes could do that every time with such soul and musicality.

The versions by the Vanduras and the Nashville Bar Association are almost unlistenable to me because they're using intervals that aren't in the original (Toni Fisher) version. Sorry, they just grate on my psyche.

Wes Montgomery got it right by using single notes in that portion instead of chords or intervals.

I love the Wes and Gary Brandon versions and hate the Toni original. Guess that's what makes horse races!

Of course, you're right Andy. My comments weren't about the players or their skill, but how the song is interpreted. I just checked eight different sites for a chord chart, and exactly none of them were the same (most weren't even close). My ear just "looks" for a certain harmonic content, and when it's changed, it has to fit with the chord being played. Oh Well
