I found this and some other Glen Shelby cuts on YouTube. Great stuff and great playing all around. I hadn't heard of Glen Shelby before. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSshU2sF5C4

Dang, that steel is on fire. Lot of the licks sound like Jay Dee to me.

Apart from album cuts on Youtube I haven't even turned up anything on Glen Shelby much less the musicians who played on the project. The album art has a silhouette of the state of Texas so that must be where the project was recorded. I like it.

Here's Jan Browne's version, the only one of this song I have with Jay Dee. Good comparison, similar in some respects, but Jay Dee's tone is his alone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3Z8iwCq7D4

WEll that "Texas Road Music" is based here in Austin, Tx...; so I have a couple of text out...It's not Lloyd Maines and not Tommy Detamore and not Jim Loessberg...so my next guess is maybe Nathan Fleming; so I texted him....we'll see.

It reminds me very much of some of Sarah Jory's steel antics too, but I kind of doubt she's been doing studio sessions in Austin.

Well I talked with Nathan F. and it's not him; so I really run out of clues now.

Well thanks for the effort Ricky. Maybe all will be revealed eventually. If I played like that I’d want credit for it 😊

that really is some fine playing. seems almost impossible that someone could play like that and not be well known. can't wait to find out his/her name.

The CD is from 2014, and the "Ranchroadmusic.com" shown on the cover is no longer an active web site.

With all the Texas folks on here I'm surprised somebody hasn't known the artist and provided more info.

Mr. Shelby passed away in 2015. I reached out to Austin-based Ranch Road Music via their Facebook page - no response yet.

What about Milo Deering? He's in Texas and although I've not heard him play that style exactly, he certainly seems able to play anything he takes a notion to.
I'm sorry to hear Mr Shelby has left us and I'm grateful to have found this legacy of his talent.

I found Mr. Shelby's obituary, and it turns out he was the stepfather of a friend of mine. My friend's brother runs Ranch Road Music so I put the question to him. He did some research which included contacting the producer, who thinks it was either Robbie Primm or Junior Knight. According to him they both played on the album but he wasn't quite sure who played on this particular cut.

Yes like Tommy presented, i just got this email from Shane:
[quote]Good afternoon Ricky,

I pulled your email address from the forum.  I tried to reply to the thread, but I had to register and wait for approval.  Glen was my step-father who passed away about 6 years ago.  I am so happy to see that his album is getting some attention!  I reached out to the producer, Chip Bricker, and he confirmed the steel players were Junior Knight and Robbie Primm – depending on which track (Chip did not provide any further details).  I read where some thought it was Lloyd, which would have been amazing to have him on there too – he is actually a second cousin.

I have replied to a couple of Facebook messages regarding this inquiry, but would you mind sharing this info on the steel forum?  Thank you for your time, let me know if you need any more info…take care!
