Summer always turns my mind toward surf music and how much fun it is to play on lap steel! Here's a little tip and demo from my "Surf Music for Lap Steel" book on using bar pressure vibrato. It's meant to imitate a Bigsby or other mechanical arm vibrato and gives you a different feel than a bar sliding or bar rolling vibrato.

Thanks! It was quick and dirty but fun. My mom had a 45 of Frankie Laine signing Jezebel in his overwrought style. I listened over and over at about age ten and I guess the tune stayed with me.

I’ve been experimenting with this a bit this week. I found it to be easier/more effective when my tuning had lower string tension.
Is this something you have found Andy, or is it just a matter of technique and practice?

I’ve only used it with sixth tunings on a 22.5" scale. it makes sense it’d be harder with higher tension. Scale length too would be a factor.
