I have used the letters A B C D E for the pedals so
this can be copied into "wordpad" so you can search/replace
(A to (E below with the correct pedal-number for your setup.

I looked at your post again and realized that you intentionally used letters in order to help use your tab. Oops, sorry about that. I looked at your nifty tab and carelessly didn't read some of the text. So I editted out my post. Hope you post some more stuff. Thanks.

If you print this out take a pencil-marker and mark ACROSS the strings
the major intervals in one color and the minor intervals in another color.
It will make things easier to see/remember.

Intervals of the C major scale

C E = I Major
D F = II minor
E G = III minor
F A = IV Major
G B = V Major
A C = VI minor
B D = VII minor

I'm not playing C6 yet, but I'm going to print this off anyway. It looks like a good way to get an idea about what the basics of C6 would be like. I'm still wondering if I dare split my time between two necks, go to an extended E9, or just stick with E9. Thanks for taking the time to post this stuff, Bengt. Your contributions are always helpful and interesting.

A little bit about chord substitution

pedals lever
tuning P4 P5 P6 P7 P8 K
G G - A - B C - D - E F - G
E F E F - G - A - B C - D - E
C D B C - D - E F - G - A - B C
A B B A - B C - D - E F - G - A
G F# G - A - B C - D - E F - G
E Eb E F - G - A - B C - D - E
C C# C - D - E F - G - A - B C
A B A - B C - D - E F - G - A
F F# E F - G - A - B C - D - E F
C D A C - D - E F - G - A - B C

Chord substitution

How a 3 or 4 note chord can sound as a different chord.
( somebody else has to play the low Root note )

Notes of a Cmaj13 chord

1 - - - 3 - - 5 - - - 7 - - 9 - - 11 - - - 13
C E G B D F A = Cmaj13
E G B = Em ( Cmaj7 )
G B D = G ( Cmaj9 )
B D F = Bdim( Cmaj11 )
D F A = Dm ( Cmaj13 )

This means that a minor triad played 4 frets above its original position will
sound as a maj7 with the same root. (Cm moved up 4 frets = Em = Cmaj7)

tabulature example
C Cmaj7 Cmaj9 Cmaj11 Cmaj13
G ---------------------------------------
E ---------------------------------------
C ---------------------------------------
A ---------------------------------------
G ---0----4-----7----11(5---14-----------
E ---0----4(6---7----11(6---14(6---------
C ---0----4-----7----11-----14-----------
A ---------------------------------------
F ---------------------------------------
C ---------------------------------------
C (Em) (G) (Bdim) (Dm)

C Cmaj7 Cmaj9 Cmaj11 Cmaj13
G ---------------------------------------
E --------------------------5------------
C -------------------5------5------------
A -------------------5------5------------
G --------------7----5(5-----------------
E --------7-----7------------------------
C ---7----7-----7------------------------
A ---7----7------------------------------
F ---7-----------------------------------
C ---------------------------------------
C (Em) (G) (Bdim) (Dm)

Notes of a F13 chord

1 - - - 3 - - 5 - - b7 - - - 9 - - 11 - - - 13
F A C Eb G Bb D = F13
A C Eb = Adim( F7 )
C Eb G = Cm ( F9 )
Eb G Bb = Eb ( F11 )
G Bb D = Gm ( F13 )
From this you can see that a Cminor will give a F9 chord

So changing the C triad to a C minor triad will give a C-chord to a F9-Chord

Also, a triad played 2 frets below its original position
will sound as an 11th chord with the same root note.

F9 F11 F F13 F7
G ---------------------------------------
E ---------------------------------------
C ---------------------------------------
A ---------------------------------------
G ---0----3----5----7-----9(5------------
E ---0(6--3----5----7(6---9(6------------
C ---0----3----5----7-----9--------------
A ---------------------------------------
F ---------------------------------------
C ---------------------------------------
(Cm) (Eb) (F) (Gm) (Adim)

Make sure you play example one 3-4 times
before comparing with example 2

Example 2

To make things a little more interesting
play 4 notes and skip the next.
Same notes as in the previous example,
only don't play the notes marked x

makes it sound completely different.

Chords & scales

pedals lever
tuning P4 P5 P6 P7 P8 K
G G - A - B C - D - E F - G
E F E F - G - A - B C - D - E
C D B C - D - E F - G - A - B C
A B B A - B C - D - E F - G - A
G F# G - A - B C - D - E F - G
E Eb E F - G - A - B C - D - E
C C# C - D - E F - G - A - B C
A B A - B C - D - E F - G - A
F F# E F - G - A - B C - D - E F
C D A C - D - E F - G - A - B C

If you harmonize a Major scale in triads (3 note chords)
You will find three types of chords.
Major triads, minor triads and a diminished triad.

Here is the structure for the three chords.
All shown with a C root note for easy comparison.

1 - - - 3 - - 5 - - - - -
C - - - E - - G = C major triad

1 - - b3 - - - 5 - - - - -
C - - Eb - - - G = C minor triad

1 - - b3 - - b5 - - - - - -
C - - Eb - - Gb = C diminished triad

Shown as chords
C Cm Cdim
G ---------------------------------------
E ---------------------------------------
C ---------------------------------------
A ---------------------------------------
G ---0--------0---------0(5--------------
E ---0--------0(6-------0(6--------------
C ---0--------0---------0----------------
A ---------------------------------------
F ---------------------------------------
C ---------------------------------------

Instead of P5+P6 for the dim chord you can use P8
only this dim chord will be a halftone higher.

Harmonizing the Major scale in 4note chords.
There is 4 different types.
Major7th, Dominant7th, minor7th and minor7b5th

1 - - - 3 - - 5 - - - 7 -
C - - - E - - G - - - B = Cmaj7

1 - - - 3 - - 5 - - b7 - -
C - - - E - - G - - Bb - = C7

1 - - b3 - - - 5 - - b7 - -
C - - Eb - - - G - - Bb - = Cm7

1 - - b3 - - b5 - - - - - -
C - - Eb - - Gb - - - Bb - = Cm7b5

Compare with the triads above and you will see that the
three highest notes of the Cmaj7 is a minor triad only
the root of this triad is 4 notes higher than the Cnote.

That is what you do with chord substitution.

The three highest notes of the C7 is a diminished triad.

The three highest notes of the Cm7 is a major triad.

The three highest notes of the Cm7b5 is a minor triad.

Cmaj7 C7 C7 Cm7 Cm7b5
G ------------------------------------
E ------------------------------------
C ------------------------------------
A ------------------------------------
G --------------3----3-----3----------
E ---7----7(6---3----3-----3(6--------
C ---7----7-----3(8--3-----3----------
A ---7----7-----3----3-----3----------
F ---7----7---------------------------
C ------------------------------------

Now to the scales

C major scale has the notes C - D - E F - G - A - B C
Which also can be seen as: a Cmaj7 & Dm7
C - - - E - - G - - - B
- - D - - F - - - A - - C

Cmaj7 Dm7 Cmajor scale
G ------------------------------------
E ------------------------------------
C ------------------------------------
A ------------------------------------
G --------5------------------5--------
E ---7----5--------------5-7----------
C ---7----5----------5-7--------------
A ---7----5------5-7------------------
F ---7---------7----------------------
C ------------------------------------

Using the Cmajor scale but starting on a different note
gives 7 different scales
C - D - E F - G - A - B C = C IONIAN (1 2 3 4 5 6 7) = Cmaj7 & Dm7
D - E F - G - A - B C - D = D Dorian (1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7)= Dm7 & Em7
E F - G - A - B C - D - E = E Phrygian (1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 b7)= Em7 & Fmaj7
F - G - A - B C - D - E F = F LYDIAN (1 2 3 #4 5 6 7)= Fmaj7 & G7
G - A - B C - D - E F - G = G MIXOLYDIAN (1 2 3 4 5 6 b7)= G7 & Am7
A - B C - D - E F - G - A = A Aeolian (1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7)= Am7 & Bm7b5
B C - D - E F - G - A - B = B locrian (1 b2 b3 4 b5 b6 b7)= Bm7b5 & Cmaj7

If you can find the two appropriate chords then you have all
the notes of the different scales.

Two other scales
C Lydian b7 = 1 2 3 #4 5 6 b7 1 = C7 & D7
use the lydian b7 for any dom7th chord other than the V7

Anders

Hi Bengt,
I loved your C6 angle, how about a similar study on the E9th neck.....

like chord theory, postioning and application, and scaling.....

thanks a million...you're the greatest

Bengt...Thanks for all the great work you've been doing! Wanna apply your analytical mind to finding all the Augmented and 7#5 chords using the C6 5+1 setup? I for one would love to see what you find. It would be much appreciated!

There are many to be found, full or partial.
So lets focus on Not all, but some that sounds OK.
Some positions for augmented and 7#5 Chords.
The examples have the #5 as the highest note.

pedals lever
tuning P4 P5 P6 P7 P8 K
G G - A - B C - D - E F - G
E F E F - G - A - B C - D - E
C D B C - D - E F - G - A - B C
A B B A - B C - D - E F - G - A
G F# G - A - B C - D - E F - G
E Eb E F - G - A - B C - D - E
C C# C - D - E F - G - A - B C
A B A - B C - D - E F - G - A
F F# E F - G - A - B C - D - E F
C D A C - D - E F - G - A - B C

Gaug (repeats at every 4th fret up/down)
G ---------------------------------------
E ---------------------------------------
C ---------------------------------------
A --8(4----------------------------------
G --8------------------------------------
E --8(6----------------------------------
C ---------------------------------------
A --8(4----------------------------------
F ---------------------------------------
C ---------------------------------------

note: requires both feet.

C7#5 C7 C7#5 C7#5(no root)
G ---------------------------------------
E --3(6----------------------------------
C --3(7*---7-----------------------------
A ---------7------10(4*------------------
G --3-------------10(5----13-------------
E ---------7(6------------13(6-----------
C ----------------10---------------------
A --3---------------------13-------------
F ---------7-----------------------------
C ----------------10(5-------------------

Note * = halfpedal

Example 2
C7#5 F9 or C7 F7 F7b9 C13 C7#5 F9 or F9
G -----------------------------------------------------
E --3(6--3---------------------------------------------
C --3(7*-3-----7----6(K--6-----------------------------
A -------------7----6----6----10(4--10(4*--8(7---------
G --3----3(5------------------10----10-----8-----12----
E -------------7(6--6(6--6(6---------------------12(6--
C ----------------------------10----10-----8(8---------
A --3----3---------------------------------------12----
F -------------7----6(5--6-----------------8(8---------
C ----------------------------10(5--10(5---8(8---12----

for the F9 at 8th fret choose either
9th or 10th string. (5th or root in bass)

And if you don't play the lowest note then:
C7#5 F9 = C7#5 F9
G --------------------------------------
E ----3(6--2(6------4----3--------------
C ----3(7*-2(7*-----4----3--------------
A --------------------------------------
G ----3----2--------4(5--3(5------------
E --------------------------------------
C --------------------------------------
A --------------------------------------
F --------------------------------------
C --------------------------------------

How do you get all this stuff (tab & pedal arrangement) to printout. Everytime I copy it and paste it to MS word everything is out of line.

Copy it to NotePad, it uses a mono-spaced font.
