The human engineering mind is amazing. This was a very informative video. In its klugy complexity, you could think of a Hurdy Gurdy as a medieval pedal steel.

one of the coolest instruments ever. _________________ Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; praise is meet for the upright. Give praise to the Lord with the harp, chant unto Him with the ten-stringed psaltery. Sing unto Him a new song, chant well unto Him with jubilation. For the word of the Lord is true, and all His works are in faithfulness. The Lord loveth mercy and judgement; the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.

I've followed the gurdy for several years on a couple of FB groups. I love the thing and for a long time I thought I'd eventually get one but I've become convinced that it just may be one of the most maintenance-intensive instruments there is. Applying cotton and resin etc.....it's not gaining a new instrument. It's gaining a dependent. Not enough time in this lifetime, I'm afraid. |

I have zero desire to own one - or even play one - but I'm fascinated how the human mind sees a need or a problem and engineers a solution.
Hurdy Gurdys, pedal steel guitars, knitting an argyle sweater, helicopters on Mars, iPhones ... on and on ... _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

“I have zero desire to own oneâ€
Good because a decent one is expensive and long waiting lists. _________________ Check out the Steel Guitar Union Hall Facebook group for you daily dose of Steel https://www.facebook.com/groups/steelguitarunionhall |

There is a term that is frequently used in the gurdy community -- HGSO. Hurdy Gurdy Shaped Object. There are some makers that market things that basically don't and won't work to hungry beginners who dare to dream of an instrument in the hundreds of dollars rather than thousands. |

One of my favorite instruments is the Norwegian nyckelharpa...hurdy-gurdy-esque you might say. No nifty wheel bowing, but the keying system is there (plus bonus sympathetic strings!)
