Electrons are a big mystery to me. Would a meter reading of .494K on a Gibson wide-oval/racetrack 6-string pickup indicate it's bad? Most of my other 6-strings measure between 8.00K and 10.00K.
My measurements were taken with all controls full-on and the meter probes on the tip and sleeve of one of these things inserted in the jack:

That reading is not good at all. But, to take all other parts out of the equation, I would unsolder the hot lead of the pickup from the controls and measure again between that lead and ground. If you get the same or similar reading it is probably shorted and needs to be rewound.

Thanks, Michael. I shall do exactly that and report back. I should have mentioned in my original post that the pickup makes sound, but it's quite weak and very thin-sounding; not at all like my other instruments with the same pickup. |

| "OL" means Open Load on most meters. It means the pickup wire is broken. It still produces an anemic signal because of something called capacitive coupling between the two separated windings. |

Unless it is possible to find a short, or break, near (the first inches) where the leads enter the windings, it is time to rewind or replace that PU. |

Thanks, everyone. I pulled the pickup from the instrument, boxed it up, and it will be on its way to Jerry Sentell in Sacramento tomorrow morning.
