That was great! He does great theory vids.
A favorite song to jam on. And many times when it’s been thrown out there, and I try remember the progression, I’ll now remember circle of fifths......â€and it’s in Eâ€.
Thanks for sharing. _________________ A banjo, like a pet monkey, seems like a good idea at first. |

Andy, before I spend 17 mins, was there ever any doubt about this?
It's just as much in E as all the other things written in E by guitarists. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

If I didn't feel it was worth watching I wouldn't have shared the link. The trip to eventually land on "key of E" was circuitous and interesting - at least to me. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

Just stumbled on this yesterday coincidentally, fascinating how he really dissected the tune as guitar chord changes, I love his youtube channel and subscribe. _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION

I've watched it now, so thanks Andy for posting. It's very good and interesting, but to make the same points he could have picked any one of countless songs that are bluesy, guitar-based and in E.
I thought it was going to be about Hey Joe's distinctive chord progression, which could give rise to debate. A lot of guitarists think it's in C. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

I’d respectfully disagree. At least with the guys I play with. It’s one of the few blues songs where I’ve had the guys argue about what key it’s in. Most all other blues songs (with the guys that I play with) , the key is very obvious. I usually have to whip out a harp to prove the key. Cross-harp (playing the harp in the 4 key) usually points it out rather quickly. _________________ A banjo, like a pet monkey, seems like a good idea at first. |

Not many people know that the working titles were “Hey Joe, Don't These Chords Sound Cool?†and “Hey Joe, With These Chords You Can Spell The Word CAGED†and “Hey Joe, Here’s An Excellent Simple Tune That Will Keep The Theory Geeks Busy Foreverâ€.
I mean really. Seventeen minutes to conclude with Key of E? Hats off to the guy for getting a jillion clicks. |

That's excellent! Brooks, I'm not sure that we actually disagree. My remark about C was a sly dig at certain guitarists only. I once sat in with a band where the nearest person was the guitarist, and he promised to call out the keys. It took a few numbers before I realised he was just giving me the first chord! I know I am not the only one who has been a victim of this, and I apologise to Andy for wandering off his topic, which is a good one _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Do think the bass player said, "Hey Jerry - what key is this song in?"
|
If he did, Jerry's answer: "It's in B". |
