I just bought a 1974 Princeton Reverb. When I play through it the sound starts at full volume and then down to about 15% volume intermittently. The tubes test ok on my tester. I find that if I tap on the reverb transformer the full volume returns for a short time and then it cuts out again. Tapping on the reverb tranny then restores full volume for a short while before it cuts out again. Shorted reverb transformer?

Sounds like it is a definite possibility.

Turns out the reverb cables were bad. I replaced them with some spare RCA stereo cables and after playing through it all morning the problem has not reoccurred. Seems odd that the reverb cables would affect the overall volume of the amp.

I thought you meant that the Reverb level would drop but come back when you tap the transformer. If the RCA cable that drives the tank shorts out it could draw excessive current from the drive tube and actually pull the DC voltage down. That could affect the complete preamp section.
