I posted this on YouTube today. E13 tuning (tuning listed in the video description). Guyatone D-8... the perfect guitar for Sukiyaki! Thanks for watching.

I always love the songs you pick, Doug. What effect are you using? Very cool sound for this kind of song.

Seriously, that is a favorite of mine. I love your covers from the great period of instrumental music.

Oh no, Scott... please! Laughing

Thanks Joe, the only effects are reverb and delay... what you’re hearing is a Stratocaster playing the melody one octave above the steel. I decided to add that because the Guyatone sounded muddy on the lower frets. I didn’t notice it when I was playing the song, but when I mixed the audio, I couldn’t get much clarity from the steel on the low parts. So I added the higher octave and blended the steel and the guitar. It’s a little weird, but it works for this song.

Thanks Mike, yes, the “twin guitars” worked out well. A lot of people have asked me what effect I’m using. 😊

Great playing, as always, but I cannot hear this melody without singing Pat Donohue's "Sushi Song."

"I nearly died . . ."

"The night they tried . . ."

"To make me eat that yucky sushi."

Sukiyaki was a hit in Japan first and the title was "Ue o Muite Arukō" which translates to "I Look Up as I Walk". A happy melody, but sad lyrics about a guy who walks alone, crying, thinking about better times. When the decision was made to release the song in English-speaking countries, the record company decided to call it Sukiyaki... a word that was more easily pronounced and remembered by English speaking people. Sukiyaki is a Japanese hot dish and has nothing to do with the lyrics of the song! Anyway, it was a wise marketing decision. Sold 13 million records.

One of my favorite tunes (I play it in open D) but I never really learned the bridge! As always, Doug, I love what you do and how you adapt a classic song for steel guitar. Is that your Guyatone? It's a natural for lap steel and your version is terrific.

Thanks Andy Smile Yes, I had to use the Guyatone for Sukiyaki... the song and the guitar both made in Japan!
