Mines a D10 around a 1992 and the only one that I have seen with George L's in script on the right hand side of the
guitar as your facing it. |

The D10 I owned was the one that got away. I stated in another post that my D10 LeGrande is my all time favorite axe, but this thread reminded about the Derby—-it was a ( slightly) better sounding guitar.

I wanted to buy the company, but I was so disconnected that Charlie had passed 5 years earlier than the time I talked with his wife. That’s how much I believed in the standard product. I had some ideas and sketches for some proposed expansion of the product line, but of course, it never was to be.

Terry Crisp really made that Derby sing. Love that solo!
Marty, you would have made a great builder of Derby Steels and could not have picked a more deserving steel line then the Derby to continued it's legacy.
Your story sounds much like mine, I picked up my SD10 from a fellow in Kentucky and was headed home in Ohio when I stopped by Charlies shop & home, but found no one there. I later learned that he was in the hospital and sometime later passed. I so wanted to meet him and talk about the wonderful instrument I had just bought.
I've since worked on many Derbys and always found them to be straight forward, if not easy, to mod or repair. Charlie for sure built one of the best out there.

Richard, no that's not the guitar in the Reba video.
It was a burgundy colored guitar. Terry actually despised that guitar because it wouldn't stay in tune. The solo you see in the video is actually an overdub in the studio after the live performance. He told me he had messed it up live due to that guitar coming out of tune. He said that was the only guitar he got from Charlie that ever had issues. The rest of them were great. I actually got to play several of his derby guitars over the years and they all were killer. He let me have one years ago. Still got it and it has a tone unlike any other one I've played. Serial number 0095. |

Richard. That's the guitar I referred to on pg.1 and posted a partial polaroid of that I used to own. It was Terry's studio guitar at one time according to Charlie.
I cut out the Derby logo on the rear from a brochure and taped it on with clear tape. I'm surprised to see it's still on there.
Concerning the George L's logo Greg referred to on the left end of his guitar, Charlie was a dealer and user of George L's string. Those are just decals that he stuck on all of his guitars for a time. |

I have owned 2 different Derby a SD-10 4-5 & a D-10 8-8
The D-10 is Sn # 027 formally owned by Boogie Sherrard
I love the Derby Steel as much as I love the Emmons Le Grande ll.
