Nice picture. Good story. I particularly enjoyed the story about Holland and Carl Perkins.
And this prediction.

The first idea that came to mind was seeing a picture of the Byrds playing at the Opry in '68, when their drummer Kevin Kelly (who played those great rolls on "You Ain't Going Nowhere") only had a snare in front of him.
I suspect that many drummers of the Jazz field from that time, liked playing on country records better, than in other genres. I think of Kenny Malone as an example.

I took the time to read the whole article. It's worth the time as it is well written and researched.
It was kind of funny though to read Vince Gill's comment about old style country music having to make way for the new style of country music as played by Clint (Black), Garth (Brooks), Reba (McIntyre) and Alan (Jackson). I can only imagine the thoughts he's thinking when he's sharing the 'Opry stage with Florida Georgia Line or John Pardee.

What an interesting article, with some great stories! Thanks to Charles for posting.
Just one correction, there is a mention of a band called “Paul Franklin And The Arkansas Cotton Pickersâ€. That one caught my attention, but I looked it up and the name should be Paul Howard, not Franklin.
That does look very much like Hank Garland in the pic.
Drummers had to hide behind a curtain but the accordionists were given the honor of being placed next to the guitarist...? Times have indeed changed. |
