I've heard Curly had three of these on Hee-Haw, any pictures of em? I also heard he modded them with pedals and knee levers. I just found out about him and very different than the average steel player.

Hopefully Johnny Cox might know. He was a follower of Curly Chalker and probably knows more than anyone. He's a forum member.

Curly Chalker was one of my favorite steel players. Check out this DVD of him playing at some steel shows. If you dig Curly's playing, you're going to want to get this. https://www.steelguitarshopper.com/products/Curly-Chalker-In-Concert-DVD.html

Johnny is a great player, I've never spoke with him! His Perm is superb.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Curly switched his necks around.
He had the C6th neck located in front. Very Happy

With a Crossover? That's quite the achievement!

When I saw Curly, he had the necks switched but I'm not sure he was playing a Crossover. Very Happy

I've been told that Curly plays the Crossover on this live recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxssS54tKEk

Ohhh, I think that was his MSA while playing on the Wilburn Brothers show with Jimmy Capps.

I saw him live in Minneapolis.
I think Suneson Music brought him to town to play.
He was amazing on C6th! Very Happy

I'm going to guess Curly didn't play a cross-over for very long. Maybe Johnny Cox will check in. He always had the C6th on top. Or at least sense the early 60's.

You can see Curly on Hee Haw via the Circle TV Network. Depending on how they sequence the shows, probably several days a week. I've seen him playing 'Buds on that show but you can't really tell what model cause he's usually in the background.

Most of the shows he's playing that black MSA. It's definitely tuned C6 front. I think Curly had a little different tuning on the country neck. There again, Johnny Cox is the authority on that I believe.

Dave Zirbel - As far as I know, you are correct about Curly playing the Cross-Over on that live, Dick Curless album. Dick and I were friends and he told me that Curly was playing a Sho-Bud when they did the live recording. Also, another great steel player, Buzz Evans, actually played lead guitar on that live album.

I played quite a few shows with Dick around New England in the late '80s. He was booked to do shows with local bands and used me on steel and to quide the local players through his songs. He was a great guy and singer... always one of my favorites.

Anyway, Curly sure was awesome !!!
Hope you're well Dave.

I remember that show; Chalker was indeed amazing. Uncle Rog was the MSA dealer in the Twin Cities, and sponsored a show in the Legion Hall down the street. He told me he'd never seen a guy consume so much liquor in such a short period of time. You could not tell by the way he played. Superb.

The long-gone Sunseson's Music Center, between 16th & 17th Avenues on East Lake Street, Mpls. Much of this neighborhood was torched last summer.

Jack,
I remember thinking to myself, if he can play that good drunk, I wonder what he'd sound like sober? Whoa!
Erv

PS: Sunseson's had a back door and anytime I got close I would park in the back and walk in. They always had the coffee pot on. Very Happy

Roger Suneson (RIP) could sell ice to Eskimos. I walked in the door one day for a set of strings for my roundback Ovation, and left with a MSA Red Baron and signed up for private lessons from the great Cal Hand.

This seems like the right place OK to mention that U still have around 130 copies of the "im concert" DVD sitting in boxes in my garage.

Please let me know if you want one.
