So just yesterday I went down a Youtube-algorithm-based rabbit hole of a few groups that I'd never heard of before...Vulfpeck, Scary Pockets, Louis Cole. As a recovering bassist, the young guys in each of these groups playing bass are just phenomenal to watch and listen to.

First up was Vulfpeck. Bassist is Joe Dart, and the guy is just a beast.

Snippets of the same song but arrayed in order of ascending tempo (stick around for, or skip to the later sections):

Full show at Madison Square Garden:

Louis Cole has some live videos that are, admittedly, a bit silly/weird, but he's a great drummer/keys player and his bass player (Sam Wilkes) is just a lot of fun to watch...he obviously has a lot of fun himself playing.

And then I landed on another group that Sam Wilkes plays for, Scary Pockets. Rotating musicians/singers do funk/rnb versions of popular songs regardless of original genre. Often improving on them in my opinion!

Mononeon is the cat. He and Thundercat are two of my favorites. Also, with Louis Cole you also might see Tim Lefebrve.

Nice, tasteful steel playing there!

Have had "Dean Town" in my head this morning. I find it wild that this entire crowd ended up trying to sing along with a bassline by this semi-obscure albeit awesomely talented group...not even just the beginning 16th notes, but those complex lines throughout the tune. I'd have to study this tune for a bit to get that line down, and here you have a cheering crowd singing along! Must be a pretty devoted (and likely musician-heavy) fanbase. Like, if at a Chick Corea /Return to Forever concert, the crowd starts singing that funky break in Spain, semi-accurately, I'd be pretty surprised too!

I've seen mononeon play with Scary Pockets before, interesting guy...reversed playing style and all! Recently watched his covers / playalongs with KNOWER (Louis Cole and Genevieve Artadi), that's some great stuff he comes up with.
