Topic: Fender 400 strings |

Hi all,
Today I just picked up a really nice example of a Fender 400, but the previous owner must have had no earthly idea what to do with it. It’s got what looks to be a 10-string C6th set with the top two strings thrown away, and the tension was much too high to tune up to pitch. I’m wondering where y’all go to get singles, or if there’s a set for 8-string I’m not finding. Ideally I’d like to put it in B6, so I know what gauges I need, just wondering if there’s an easier route than piecing several sets together.

Way cool first-generation 400 (no roller nut or bridge). That puts it squarely in the 1958-1962 period.
That's about the most pristine one I've seen in 40 years!  |

I wondered what era it was from, I just ordered strings for it and I’m going to set it up as soon as they come. It’s pretty minty for having no case |

Whoa! What a beautiful Fender! You'll probably want to swap out those lower springs as well (I am not an expert, just a tinkerer)  |

| I would use the first 8 strings gauges of a standard 10 C6 set as a guide. I personally prefer the G on top, but that's up to you. I don't think there would be any problem tuning them 1 fret lower. You can order the single strings and make up your own set, or order a packaged set and discard strings 9 and 10. |
