Hey wait a minute b0b,
I'm getting old too now. It just dawned on me that your guitar seems to have 4 legs! Either custom ordered or after market. Got any pics of the underside? Do the legs fit in the case? Never seen that before.

It doesn't have legs. It's on a stand.

Sorry, I don't remember. I bought it from someone here on the Forum years ago.

That looks like a Deluxe 34 stand by Mark Roeder.

Here's a 6 string bobbin with 8 pole pieces.
I've been cleaning up a DW 16 and thought I'd post a photo of the pick-up while it was apart. Interesting how the non-adjustable pole pieces are higher on the treble side and very gradually descend to the low 8th string.

I was wondering why my forward slants on the top 3 strings were sounding out of tune. Close examination shows that the string spacing for the first string is wrong at the nut. Sad Dang!

To me, it looks like the 2nd string is out of place.

Whatever. It's not right in either case.

The 8th string is much closer to the edge of the nut than the 1st string.

FWIW, here's an interesting fact. If you tune a 6th tuning to harmonically (just intonation), the forward slant on the top 3 strings is pretty close to equal temperament. That's why it sounds in tune. Maybe Jerry Byrd discovered this - he certainly used it a lot on those old records.

The chord formed is the 1st inversion of a minor - b3 5 1. For example on C6th, at frets 10 11 12 the notes are G B E - an Em chord, 1st inversion.

If the spacing between strings 1 and 2 is too narrow, the G to B interval will actually be sharp of equal temperament. Our ears can't tolerate that. Slanting less to correct it would knock the B to E interval out of tune, which is also unacceptable.

Wow, what an incredible post. The Steel forum comes through again! I've just been working on my DW16 wooden double-neck, and the dw14106 number stamped into the tuning pan is on Mark's list-thanks Mark. Its not in the best cosmetic condition, but very solid and plays well. The 1st string notch on front neck (A6) is a tad low. The removable sticky dots I've put on the rear neck (c#min7) are a little clownish, but I find those fret markers hard to get used to. I've seen one where the squares are actually colored which would be pretty cool. The funny thing is that the flocking on the underside is in almost perfect condition. Did these all have flocking? It looks totally Factory. Don't look at the coffee stains on the floor.

Cool bOb, Congratulations that's awesome! I don't have a Rickenbacker these days but love them. As you probably know by now, I have always been a Jerry Byrd fan. He became a Friend of mine. He played Rickenbacker a lot. Keep on Steelin' my Friend!

Hi bOb,
I'm curious if you have been able to correct the problem with the 7 pole pu in an 8 string steel?

I imagine that there are quite a few pickup rebuilders that can make 8 string bobbins ( 3d printer maybe?) to replace and rebuild your pickup, although it might be a bit pricey.

Here is a Rickenbacker pickup that I recently rebuilt for a client.
