Quad reverb speakers?

I have a set of '72 quad reverb (oxford) speakers that are in terrible shape. One is shorted, one is locked up and while the other two sound fine the cones have past repairs. I hate to throw things like this away but I am not sure they are worth the price of a recone or shipping. Any thoughts on what I should do with them?

I would recone them. Always consider that the magnet structure has something to do with the tone and when those magnets got poured way back when, they don't get the same results pouring them today.

Save the speaker!

If you can get the exact cones would be better.

The Oxfords were designed close to the Jensens. Note that Jensen America is no more and resides in a little town in Italy.

Oxford Speakers - A History Lesson

Oxford speaker letter codes denote power handling. The higher the letter, the higher the
power rating. I found an Oxford ad in a 1960s trade magazine with the peak power
ratings of some speakers: K = 25 watts, L = 30 watts, M = 40 watts, and T = 45 watts
(12" speaker) or 60 watts (15" speaker). It is important to note that these are peak
power ratings, not RMS power. The RMS rating is more realistic and is usually about half
of the peak rating so use that as a rough guide.
The "J" rated speakers are usually found on 12-watt Princetons. The "K" rated speakers
are found in reverb and non-reverb Deluxes and in multi-speaker amps up to 40-watts
such as the Tremolux and Concert. The "L" rated speakers are found in reverb and nonreverb Deluxes, some Tremolux amps, and multi-speaker amps like the blackface
Concert, Super Reverb and Vibrolux Reverb. The "M" rated speakers had good service life
in the piggyback Bassman and Bandmaster amps, but were easily blown in blonde Twins.
The "T" rated speakers were standard in Twin Reverbs, but like the Jensen C12Ns, they
often had a short service life.
Many amp geeks don't like Oxford speakers found in Fender amps from 1965 through the
1970s. The gap distance was increased in the Oxfords that Fender used later in the
decade and this reduced their efficiency (and they were cheaper to make this way).
Again, I say let your ears be your guide. I've heard many great sounding Fender amps
with Oxfords. I will admit that I prefer Jensens, but I've never let an Oxford speaker sway
my decision from owning a Fender amp. Additionally, the Oxfords from early '60s
generally sound very good. According to noted vintage amp specialist Gregg Hopkins,
these early Oxfords were constructed similarly to Jensens from that period with respect
to materials and voice coil gap. That could explain why they sound good.

16 ohm speakers I think. If you don't have the amp , you might as well sell them . The two that work would be worth something , maybe $50 each. The dead ones you could toss in with the purchase of the working ones.

my opinion, and of course I have one, those speakers ( above) are way overrated, they are not efficient speakers and never were. Tone is just way to MIDDY as well.

Back then Fender was just buying boatloads of speakers and sticking them in amps , there was no rhyme or reason why other than they could because thats what they purchased, by the boatload.

Grab some new era Eminence speakers and be happy, the amp will also be happy !

These NEW era Fender/Eminence speakers are , for the money, great. Bright ,efficient and will not break the bank.

I personally use the same speakers in each of my amps now as well as ext cabs. And that includes my Nashville 112 .

All of the older Fender Utah's, Jensons, Oxfords etc are sitting in a box somewhere, where they belong .

No I am not claiming these Fender Emmi's to be the best speaker out there but I am saying value, efficiency and tonewise they are really hard to beat. Supposedly, these are Emmi Legends or based on that Emmi design.

When I stuck a pair in my 71 Twin ( removed the Oxfords) the amp literally woke up , it became a totally different amp. Night and day. With these speakers, you will never be chasing that MID RANGE scoop. I believe these have been the primary stock speakers for Fender since the early or mid 90's.

I have never blown one and one has never bit the dust for other reasons. and... uhh.. I am not known to be gentle quiet player. Kinda the opposite ! Whoa!

dont recommend throwing anything vintage out...somewhere there is someone who loves those things. put them on ebay for a deal and pack em up and ship em out. much better than trashing them.

they will all need reconing...even the cone repaired ones. they can be reconed to whatever ohms you want. these are not like high end jbls or ev. there are all sorts of recone kits that will fit these and may even improve the sound of them. if you have a recone service close to you, give them a call see what they can offer.

if you dont want to mess with them, put the four of them on ebay starting at hundred bucks + shipping and see what happens.
