C, great post, spot on..but you may want to add another step, I call it step 1 Very Happy


step 1 - Contact the seller by PM or Email, how long does it take him ( or her) to respond.

step 1 A -Talk on the phone before ANY agreements are made.

Its quite amazing how much you can learn about another person who exhibits ZERO or delayed communication.

Or just PAYPAL them $4000 and wait for a case with 50 lbs of rocks in it to arrive ! Laughing

I would advice against taking photos in direct sunlight = way too much contrast. A cloudy day is a much better option, ask any pro photographer.

Otherwise, Carl is absolutely spot on. I've applied the same philosophy selling stuff online for almost twenty years. A complete, honest description and good photos will result in a faster sale, a better price and happy buyers that will return (not even one single complaint yet in over 2,000 deals).

I spent about 2 hours taking the pictures including the smaller sized ones for the links page for my new MSA and the copedant chart. Funny thing is even many manufacturers don't have detailed photos of their guitars.

Asking a realistic price is important. I recently sold a Franklin and I asked (and got) what I thought was a fair price. I could have asked more but I'm not greedy. I've been downsizing and selling a lot of other items and the same way most below market price. Nothing I have is "gold plated".

This is really quite a community service from Carl ! Long overdue.

A few added observations that we all see :

If we are selling a Fender Telecaster ( or Strat) and someone has to ask, is it MIM , MIJ ,Made in China or Made in USA ? Our add is missing vital information.

IF we are selling a Pedal Steel and someone has to ask, how many knee levers ? Our add is missing vital information.

IF we post "contact me for pricing" we are missing vital information.


While personal opinions are good, valuable and noteworthy, statements such as " Its just as good if not better than any USA Guitar I have ever played" is an irrelevant statement, just short of obnoxious. How so ? Why, how many guitars have you played ?

Instruments should be priced and valued on their own standing merit. Opinions are excellent with regard to the individual instrument otherwise we may be attempting to sell Lloyd a Push Pull because its better than his Sho Bud ! Laughing

+1 for automatically discarding ads without an asking price. Another thing I find weird is "want to trade" ads (I know many will disagree, feel free to do so).

What are the chances that the guy who is ready to get rid of his Thingamajig X394 wants your Whatchamacallit 2000 (and nothing else) in return? I guess slim to none, mostly. Money was invented to end this kind of hassle! A straight sale will expand the market enormously compared to asking for a specific trade. (No, your guitar is NOT worth more in a trade deal!)

Carl, When I bought the Franklin, late 82, everyone asked or told me you bought it because of Paul Franklin Jr. Truth was I didn't know or even heard of Paul Franklin Jr until AFTER I bought the guitar. I had been playing a D-10 PP Emmons and got tired of fighting the Hysteresis and bought the Franklin because it was the only production steel with the drop return compensators at the time.

This goes along with Per's comment about selling (or buying) a guitar because so and so plays one.

I try to avoid disclaimers in a listing, but you know there are those that find fault no matter what. Yes theres a little ding I missed. Eveyone's computer screen displays a slightly different color too. Its a used guitar, you want perfect, you must buy brand new.

This is actually a much bigger problem in ebay, where its easy to 'blackmail' the seller for a discount, since ebay almost alaways sides with the buyer. Ive had 99% good experiences here. And low commission.

Ditto the copedent CHART.
