My two-hole puller Sho-Bud Pro 1 probably sounds best but my Mullen sure holds tune better and is smoother to play!! _________________ 1967 Emmons Bolt On, 1995 Mullen PRP 3x5,Nashville 112, JOYO Digital Delay, Goodrich Volume Pedal, Livesteel Strings |

The tone on these is all I need I guess if they sell I’ll be looking for another tone monster
An old Buds an Emmons would be what I would try an find!
I think the casted parts certainly help.
An the material for changer fingers. An pins instead of slots in the changer fingers makes some improvement in tone.

For me it all depends on the gig. For the Texas shuffle music like Price, Bush ect. I use my 68 Sho-Bud. For a swing gig with some country mixed in I prefer my MSA Legend. I would probably play an old push pull, 65, 66 or 67 on my Bobby Flores gigs if I had one. I like Zumsteels too for an all around sound. I like having choices. _________________ Johnny "Dumplin" Cox

Well, since you ask…
That old and modified Dekley adds a "kickback" or swelling/blooming a second or so after the pick-attack, which does not excist on any of my other steels. So it is still my favorite tonewise. |

What Is your Favorite Steel Guitar For Tone?
I've slightly altered the question topic text to emphasize what I think it means.
I've played about a dozen different models and brands of guitars over more than 40 yrs. I've had a few compliments on my tone with several of them. That pretty much tells me what the listener hears.
Since I'm on the other side of it, I'm more concerned with what I like to hear.
Out of all those years and guitars, I've never played better or enjoyed the sound more than when I was playing mid 90's Mullen PRP guitars, so that does it for me. |

Most of the beautiful tone we love comes from the player not the brand steel they play
But some pros choose playability over Old Bud’s an Emmons push pull good tone.
Half stops. Split pedal ,compensators, wrist leaver, 0 pedal Crawford cluster knees lots going on her. I’ll just enjoy some good Loyd Green 3 pedal 4 knee leaver music. |

fwiw, Buddy Emmons said Sierra had the best C6 tone in his opinion. and some of the first Emmons wraparounds for E9.
I've owned several guitars and really loved the tone of them all (BMI, ShoBud Pro 3, Sierra, Carter, Williams). I'm very happy with my 2 current axes, an Emmons LL3 and a JCH. I owned an early Zum for a short while and was very impressed with it too. _________________ 1965 Emmons S-10, 3x5 • Emmons LLIII D-10, 10x12 • JCH D-10, 10x12 • Beard MA-8 • Oahu Tonemaster |
