Wish I could hear it. After 50+ years as a crewmember on military transport aircraft, my high freq hearing loss is nothing short of apalling. My ears are a built-in low pass filter.
A6th with the E on top is my favorite sounding tuning. |

Nice playing there, in C6.
I haven't delved into this yet, but I think Don Helms wrote a book of tabs that are supposed to be exact transcriptions of his playing with Hank. G# on the top, of course. |

This stuff plays fine in C6, and suits some singers' voices better. And you can still "get there" moving up 4 frets higher into nosebleed territory. The only minor issue is to get the "timbre" of Don's tone the lighter string gauges you would typically use for his E6 do make a difference.
The Helms book is very good, but I think it reflects the way Don was playing things at the time the book was recorded/published. The original Hank recordings (and radio transcriptions) may have slight variations. But if you can play the stuff in the book then you should be able to hear what Don is doing in his recordings.
Somewhat off topic: I haven't looked around at GCG listings in a while, but they seem to have really gone up. I know it's just asking prices and varies widely, but I'm seeing 2x-3x what I gave just a few years ago. |

Yes, though he hardly ever used the lowest 2 strings. |
