I just impulsively bought a 6 string Gretsch G5700 used so I can have something I can travel with or mess around on when I'm away from the pedal steel. I'd like some sort of 6th tuning to play western swing and some simple jazz melodies.

Can someone recommend a tuning and some possible string gauges?

That seems good to me, and was something I thought I should try. Thank you!

That's the tuning you want, Sam. Same as removing the 1st, 8th, 9th, & 10th strings from your pedal steel (assuming you're playing a D-10, of course).

The low C can be droped a full tone to Bb flat for a jazzier sound. or up half tone to C# for C6th/A7th. without having to change string gauges.

Andy Volk's slide rules book has lots of tuning ideas https://www.amazon.com/Slide-Rules-Tunings-Bottleneck-Resophonic/dp/0976070545

Also highly recommend his Exploring c6 book especially if you haven't been playing slants, behind bar bends etc.
