In the process of restoring a ‘39 New Yorker with thru-string pickup (see photo).
There was no cover/palmrest on this steel, and there seem various variants depending on year, pickup type, etc.. i own a ‘39 6-string with a form-fitting brass cover.
Looks like I’ll need to fabricate whatever needs to go there.
Also missing the diamond pattern anti-skid insert on the bottom. That seems impossible to find even a reasonably close replacement for (rubber grip tape for skayeboarders is as close as I’ve come).
Thanks in advance for any details / photos. It seems likely that National used a (nickel?) plated bent flat metal strip on the few photos I’ve managed to find.

Here are pics of my 7 string New Yorker. I believe it's from 1942. Has the string through pickup, with a wood cover over it.

I used to own a 7 string New Yorker too. Gorgeous instrument but I couldn’t get along with the tone of the pickups, 1 exposed + 2 under the fretboard. Too bad because it was definitely the coolest lap steel I’ve owned so far.
(Edit) I think if mine had the later, string-through pickup like yours, I’d probably still have it.

Thanks, Eric. This one’s got small holes for a different stamped brass cover for the over-string pickup (polepieces adjusted in top which is backplate on the pickup).
Only photo I can find of this year is a museum pic featuring chrome bridge and pickup cover that looks like the stamped brass one.
K&S makes brass sheet stock in about the right gauge, so ramping up on a prototype that’s about 1/2†wider than this one.

Maybe not directly related to a metal bridge cover..
Just a thought..
A lot of old National Triplexs and Dynamics I see are missing the bridge cover.
My post about restoring an old Dynamic for a fellow player is still active and that came in missing one.
Anyway, I had a Triplex cover which fits the Dynamic. Looks like I found a guy who can use a 3D plastics printer to make me a cover(s) at a reasonable price from the original cover.
Still working on it..
Better than waiting 4 years for one or come up on EBay.. true story that’s how long before I saw the Triplex one I got.. |

Got piece of K&S brass, but will probably try a protype out of similar gauge aluminum first.
Coke can prototype on right came out pretty good tho.

| Hi - excuse me butting in on this one .. but I've just got hold of nice piece of ash that looks like it might have a National New Yorker hiding somewhere inside! It won't be a true copy, just "inspired by" ... but I don't have any idea what size these things are (I've never seen one). Is there any chance you could just give me a size or two - like the width of the body (?) so that in drawing up I can use images I've downloaded off the net to use as templates? |
