Topic: 6 String pedal steel |

| Does anyone play a 6 string pedal? What tuning would you use ? I you look at a 6 string regular guitar you can see that there is alot of music that can be played on 6 strings ,I would think just about anything that you could play on a 10 you could get a reasonable arrangement on a 6 dont you think? I maybe be wrong .I have a 6 that im building plus an 8 string pedal thats coming along very well , just a pull release system on both guitars will do for me right now , the 6 has two pedals and 2 knees , the 8 has three pedals and might have 3 knees not sure yet . Some might say why build these why not build a 10 well i have built 10s so why not. Any comments are welcome, thanks for looking Russ |

Most of them I have researched are tuned to E or modified E9 tuning. The new Hudson 6 string also has a model setup for open G. Check the Steel Guitar Net site and look at the Hudson link...somewhere in there they show their standard tuning.

Im surprised that i got only one reply , Ill take it as most of you guys know nothing about a 6 string or an 8 pedal steel , oh well i just thought i would ask , thanks anyway  |

On a six string guitar with C6th/A7th tuning I can get just about anything I want altho' a seven string with the same tuning is my preference.
Any other strings would be without justification.
The slants used in C6th get me EVERYTHING I want.
Thus, NO NEED for pedals.
My quad BIGSBY has all eight string necks. One has two pedals for five string pulls; another has three
pedals pulling three different strings while another neck has but one pedal for a single string.
That's just my view, of course. I have to admit I know very little about six string guitars compared to many of the true experts here on the SGF.

I assume you are aware of the Fessenden Six-Shooter 6-string pedal steel:

8-string pedal steels, although not terribly common, are out there and have been for some time. They have been manufactured by some of the major builders, such Sho-Bud, Emmons, and others.
If I'm not mistaken, the administrator of this Forum regularly plays his 8-string pedal steel. |

I've got one of the Fessenden six-shooters - only 2 pedals but a lot of fun.
I tune mine like this:
Open tuning E9:
High to Low: E B G# F# D B
One pedal raises both the high B's to C# - the other raises the G# to A and the D to E.
The big advantage for me is that with both pedals down, I have the A6 tuning that I usually use on six string lap steel.
Fender used to make both single and double neck 8 string pedal steels (no knee levers though).

Bill Hatcher plays a 6 string steel. He is very good, and can do more with just 6 strings than most people can do with 10 or 12.

Just set my Six Shooter up in C6. What do you all suggest for pedals? I only have two, so what should they do to give me the best bang for my buck (or stomp)?
