I use a Cube 80 for small guitar gigs (I play a hollowbody and want a clean sound) and sometimes in conjunction with my 112 in a 2-amp setup--not for volume but for "spread"

The Cube 80 by itself has more presence or twang than the 112 but you can play with the tone controls. Also has the goodies like flanger, tremolo. They are great little amps. Lots of power. In fact I plan on getting a Cube 40 to drag around for rehearsals. A bit smaller and lighter.

I gigged it a few times with steel. I also used a 60 as well. It will amplify anything you plug into it, pretty convincingly, but it can lack headroom in a full band, imo. It just doesn't have enough transformer or something.

I did learn several tricks with these. First, the tone controls aren't intuitive. I preferred the tweed setting, and start with all the tone controls on max, fully clockwise, and back off the bass, treble, and mids to taste. I also learned that operating the volume near max, and stopping down the gain produced more headroom. Also, the speaker has a pretty small motor. I ran mine thru a E130-4, which was much more efficient. Finally, the effects are good, but they do affect the final product, and reduced headroom, which wouldn't matter if it had the power and dynamics, but in some settings, its just not enough amp imo.

Oh yeah. Great little amps.

It's my go to amp for small venues; but, I've used one numerous times at outdoor ranch parties in front of very large crowds. A big sound out of a little box.

I have both the 80X and the 80XL and really like them both. I used them for guitar and steel both when I played out. Volume wasn't a problem, the speaker was always mic'ed anyway. I didn't use the internal effects except in a pinch, I usually used a Zoom G3.

Recently added a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored blue Rose, named the "Blue Bird" to the herd. Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic again that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also added a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks.

I bought my Cube 80x, used, about 7 years ago. Great amp. I use the "Black Panel" setting with the EQ knobs all set at 9 o'clock. Played a lot of gigs with it and many hours at home.

Lots of 'bang for your buck', as they say.

The Direct Out on the Cube 80XL is quarter-inch.

I have a 20 ft instrument cable for sending a signal to the mixer.

I have also run a short instrument cable to a direct box and then a mic cable to the mixer.

Both work equally well.
