So among old-timers there was Tut Taylor. Any other famous old timers use the flat pick?
YouTube “star†Nelly uses a flat pick, as does an older YouTuber, Kountry Cuz (hybrid)
The great Junior Brown uses a flat pick, but he also uses finger picks on his middle & ring fingers.
I’m wondering how many other players here use a flat pick, either all the time, some of the time, or in hybrid mode (like Junior)
I use fingerpicks sometimes, but prefer a flat pick and/or bare fingers.

Not sure if this will count I have only started with lap steel but have been playing slide guitar a long time.
I use a flat pick that I hold so I can pick with the meat of my thumb or catch the flat pick and my thumb or just the flat pick they all sound a bit different. I then finger pick with my middle and ring finger. So far it seems to crossover to Lap Steel quite well.
It is just a bit harder to string block with a flat pick for me. So I go back to just finger picking a lot.
I am also practicing with Thumb picks and finger picks. |

Here's some flat pick info from my Surf Music for Lap Steel book ...
I'm a big fan of the Wegan picks and it's my go-to pick on my Tele. About ten years ago I handed it to Redd Volkaert who tried it for 15 seconds and couldn't give it back fast enough! So, like horse races, everyone has their own option when it comes to picks.

Me too. I purchased a gross of the "confetti" style sometime in the middle of the last decade, and doubt I'll use 'em all up in my lifetime. They're highly visible after you drop 'em on the floor (or wherever), so they're hard to lose.

| IMO...One short coming of picking with fingers is emulating "rhythm guitar". Albeit, I am a a dyed in the wool finger player guy having abandoned playing 6 string guitar with a flat pick about 20 years ago....but.. |
