I just noticed something interesting in an old National ad from 1939: it offers instruments from $35 to $575. That upper bound was an enormous amount of money for a musical instrument in 1939; a Style 4 was $195 and the Sonora (National's most expensive electric guitar) was $175. The Electric Grand Console, their most expensive steel catalogued at the time, was $150.

So what in the world cost $575?

My guess is the Grand Letar, of which only two were built - but I'm curious to hear if anyone has another candidate for an absurdly expensive National.

If it were from 10 years earlier, I'd suggest maybe Tampa Red's gold plated style 4, but I'm betting you're right with the Grand Letar.

Great article Noah, thanks!

There is also a double page article on the Grand Letar in Mark Makin's giant Nation book. (page 312)
