Does anyone know exactly what steel guitar and what amplifier Buddy used in recording the Black Album?

Hi George,
I can say with certainty that the guitar Buddy used was his ‘67 rosewood guitar that he dubbed “The Bladeâ€. Depending on who you talk to on the amp you may get different responses, but from conversations Ken Fox had with Him, Buddy thought it was a ‘59 High Power Twin. That’s just what I recall from things I’ve read on the forum over the years. YMMV.

Yes the Emmons guitar at that point for certain, the album cover looks like a wrap around

And I recall Buddy saying it was a blackface twin with stock fender speakers, NOT JBL's.

I can assure that if your never set down to a really good old Emmons push pull with original pick ups... you may not like them ...of course Buddy was the best ever..the closest I’ll ever get to him was drinking a few beers with him at Jeff’s school n the early eightie..I’m just curious about what was known about that recording..ever heard Tyler Hall live? Old push pull cut tail..and old twin.. what a player...tone to me as good as it gets... makes me want to burn everything I got..I do revere the old stuff..produces the tone I want

I believe Brad is correct about the amp. I could be wrong but, I seem to recall that the Twin was stock and was one of the studio's "house" amps.
As for the guitar, I agree with Forrest that it was "The Blade" ('67 Rosewood Cut-Tail) and that is the horn Buddy is sitting at on the album cover. That photo was taken by Peggy Emmons. Very cool..!!
I'm with you George and Jack,,, that's the sound I like as well. |

Looked at the album cover as close as I can and it does look like a cut tail, not a bolt on or wrap around
