My amp I used went down and had this old
Yorkville mn 6 p.a mixer I plugged into with a rv-3. And a 1- 15" cabinet. After a few adjustments I got pretty good tone. I was surprised .any one ever used a P.A Head for steel

I've used an old Standel PA head, and it sounds really good. They can generally be found pretty cheap, and have a pretty cool built in spring reverb too.

An additional benefit is that it is multi channel, and to some degree anyway, you can switch between several pre-programmed sounds all in one amp, or leave several steels hooked up at the same time into different channels.

Paul, I often use an old Peavey MP4 4 channel PA hooked to a 15 inch old Peavey cabinet and it sounds great. Moderate volume on this 50 watt head and reverb is lacking. If I use a Boss amp simulator pedal or the output on my Katana 100 it sound great. I can switch the Katana to 4 watts and let the PA have the volume. Something about that 15 inch Black Widow speaker just pleases my ear.

not just steel, but a lot of people use the old bogen, stromberg carlson and masco PAs as their amp head.

play music!

If you can find a Fender PA-100 or PA-135 you will be surprised how this PA head sounds with guitar or steel. The power section is like a Fender Twin or Showman with four 6L6 power tubes. The Reverb is also lush on these amps.

I have been led to believe, once you dial 'em in, these things can be made to sound okay, too:

This old modified Newcomb PA sounds amazing. It’s about 70 watts, powered by a pair of 7027A tubes.

Thanks to all for your response. My p.a.head is just temporary for practice. With a Tommy huff cabinet. It sounds pretty good with the super pro.david that Newcombe pa head looks interesting. I had a old Bogen P.A head in the the 60s that work well for guitar...
