| As you know the Pedal steel guitar is known for beautiful sounds due to the ability to raise and lower a single string in a group of strings. Here is a lick to try. String 2 lower to C#, and string 5 raise to C#.Pick both strings 2 and 5. Let them ring.Now at the same time, slowly, tastefully, release your pedal and knee lever( thats where mine are).Now what that does is the notes start in unison and string 2 raises to a D# and string 5 lowers to a B. That is on E9 neck open. You can play it in any key with your bar. You can add more on and go anywhere you want to. A beautiful lick with a sound that will make your liver quiver. Try it out , maybe you have a lick you want to share also, Thanks |

Dicky Overby used that 2nd string 5th string to C# split to kick some song off several years ago, As the first lick on a kick off.
Yes I stole it, I'm guilty, I use it in the kick off for one song our band plays. |

Been using that "lick" for over 40+ years. You don't hear it much any more though. I rarely use it these days.

Tom Brumley uses that lick to perfection on Rosie Flores' "God May Forgive You".
Right at the into...and the solo.

The lick is mildly interesting, but it passes so quickly I'm not sure anyone is impressed other than the player.
The whole tone lower on the second string has some cool other uses, so I'm not saying it's a useless change.

"Old Timers" might refer to that move as 'the Emmons cross,' as the pitch of the two stings cross over each other.
Lots of uses for that move. |

Use it more defining utilizing a half stop on 2nd string on the way up with half A pedal coming off the pedal,then slide up 2 frets ,then hit 456 major triad.

What's both interesting and subtle is that Buddy used the split-lick at two different places in the (instrumental) melody line in TMH. On the intro, the notes split in early in the phrase, at the 2nd note. And on the ride, the split comes in at the 5th note! 
There was the same subtle majesty in all his Price backups. Everything he did on those ballads was just so simple and elegant. You'd think that copying that stuff would be easy, but damn few even get close.
