Hello all - brand new to pedal steel. I’ve heard Jeffran College instructionals are a great start but word on the street is you order direct and never receive? Any used materials for sale? Or other recommendations too.
Thanks a bunch,
Max Wellington

In my opinion and order of importance for a beginner:

1. Personal 1 on 1 with a steel teacher.
2. Skype lessons with one of the many instructors found here on the forum.
3. Paul Franklin Method E9 fundamentals
4. Paul Franklin Method- full course
5. Newman material or other material offered here by forumites.

There is beginner material for sale on ebay, published by Mel Bay that's worth taking a look at. Very Happy

I started with Newman's Steel Guitar Techniques, Right Hand Alpha, then the "Up from the top" series. Jeff's courses are a great way to start in my opinion. Hopefully the company will get their issues resolved.

The material I learned the most from when starting on the pedal steel was: "The Anthology of Pedal Steel" by Dewitt Scott.
This was published by the Mel Bay and is still available for around $20.00 Very Happy

I agree with the Newman and Scotty recommendations. Although they're not strictly for beginners, there's a lot of instructional bang for the buck here:

also here but shop around:

Many thanks everyone! I should be able to learn something with all of these options Wink
I’ve been a six-stringer for 30 years but I think I’ve found a new home.
Great appreciation for the contributions to this incredible forum.

Pedal Steel Guitar instruction manual by Winnie Winston and Bill Keith, started many of us on our way. Available from 'Oak Publications' I believe.

Amazon has a Bruce Bouton Course that is good. He goes into a lot of detail of the things you need to know.

Agree with Ken about the Winnie Winston book. Although somewhat dated, everyone should have a copy.

I'm guessing most of these are *not* beginner level (I have around 8 or 10 of his books). Agree with advice to seek out face to face or skype lessons, I just signed up to start with John McClung in Wash state. Also watch Paul Franklin courses, youtube channels of Mickey Adams, Eddy Dunlap, Travis Toy,Zane King etc

Max, Jeff Newman's material is quite good at showing you WHAT to do, but not necessarily WHY you're doing it in that way.

In my Skype teaching I personalize my approach to just about every student in big and little ways, including considering how you learn best. I teach pretty holistically to train you to be a good musician, not just a good steel player.

I've helped hundreds of eager students wrap their heads around the E9 neck, email me and I'll get you a PDF course overview. Many students have been Texans!

If possible, plan to attend the March 2020 TSGA steel guitar show near Dallas, very inspiring experience and you might find a local teacher near you!

Scotty's books are also excellent, the Anthology volume is top notch but all over the map as far as proficiency required to play some of the songs.

Herb Steiner's material is likewise excellent. And for beginners, Jay Leach has a terrific book published by Mel Bay, "First Lessons: pedal steel guitar."

Paul Franklin's courses are great, just not personalized, although he does offer feedback on videos submitted by students, that's pretty amazing! The method course I would say is not where a newbie should start. The Foundations course is a better kick-off point. Since you've been playing guitar for 30 years, the Method course might be suited for you.
