Offhand, late 80's. They switched from 4 hole bellcranks to 14 hole cranks about 1990. JS

I never heard of an all-pull Emmons with a number that high.

Sorry - I misread the number as '7711'.

My mistake and yes, Bobby - mine is 2085.

Well spotted!

Joe, I've got S/N 779L and it's from 1991. Does yours have 14 hole bellcranks? Mine does.

I remember reading a post some time ago from someone that I believed worked at the Emmons Shop\Factory. Basically the person explained that serial numbers where stamped in the frames when the cabinets were made. After that the cabinets went into factory inventory. He went on to explain that cabinets came out of inventory storage on an as need basis. The cabinets might sit in storage for some time, up to a few years and that trying to date a guitar through the serial was an unreliable way to pinpoint the date it was actually built. I never took this as bible, but it seemed to be a pretty logical, credible and extensive explaination as to at least part of the process. It's one of the reasons I don't pay too much attention to serial numbers. Anyone else know anything for sure about that? Either way, supporting what I understand or clearing up a misunderstanding by me.

You understanding is correct. The only thing I would add is popular mica colors, Black, Red, and Rosewood rarely sat very long. Less popular mica colors and body's to be finished in lacquer were more likely to sit on the shelf.

Joe, thanks for the added info. My ‘91 is derby red, a more common color. I’ll add that when I picked up my first Emmons from the factory in July 1993, Jack Strayhorn said the only difference between the LeGrande and the LeGrande II series was the addition of the 14 hole bellcranks. Perhaps there were other changes but that’s what stood out. Maybe LeGrandes from the early ‘90s have 14 holers because the LeGrande II stickers hadn’t been printed yet, or Ron Sr. hadn’t decided what to call the new series, or some other reason. The takeaway is that a late model LeGrande with 14 hole bellcranks is essentially a LeGrande II.

I nearly started a new thread for this question but perhaps that's not necessary.

My LG111 is nineteen years old (delivered to me new in October, 2000 - #2085L) but I have an early memory of a steel-tech doing some routine maintenance on it at my request a couple of years later.

He remarked that, although my guitar had mostly 14-hole bell-cranks (as you'd expect), there were a handful of 4-hole cranks on there too. He asked me if he could have those 4-hole cranks if, of course, he replaced them with 14-hole ones. I had no objection as I couldn't see an advantage/disadvantage either way. (This may have been Buck Reid, but my memory is a little hazy so I can't be sure.)

My question is: why would he have wanted the four-hole cranks? Is there an inherent benefit with them? I didn't mind the switch then and I don't mind now - I'm just interested in why they'd have been desirable.

Hear is a picture of my Legrande serial number. Mine has 4 hole bellcranks. Take note of the keyhead. I think mine was made with spare parts!

This is an interesting thread that's gone past Joe B.'s original question, but before it's closed I wanted to respond to Roger's question about the different bell cranks. Personally I see no inherent value to using the 4 hole bell cranks over the 14 holers. However, the factory had a surplus of 4 holers that made their way into the counterforce mechanism on the LG IIIs, and maybe for a brief period they made new guitars that included a combo of 4s and 14s. I really don't know. I seem to remember, though, there was a period around the time your guitar was built when the factory was having a little trouble getting a steady supply of quality 14 hole bell cranks.

Thanks Bill , I appreciate your input, bitumen I didn’t remember the exact date but I was thinking it was around 1988-89, but from the previous info. Suggested it could be in low 90’s

Barry, as GM for 12 years you may take the serial number application as Bible. That was the way it was done by the cabinet builder. Number has absolutely nothing to do with when guitar was produced and shipped.

Mr. Strayhorn, what time period did you work at Emmons? Your work is highly revered and respected. A few days ago, I bought Mr. Joe's Lashley Lagrande serial number 771L. What year was it built? Thank you for your help.
